The role of the Conservation and Restoration Department at Cristóbal Balenciaga Museoa is to act as responsible custodians of the collection taking adequate care of its artifacts by documenting them correctly, ensuring they are kept in appropriate environmental conditions and cared for in general. The department is also responsible for the maintenance and condition of the Museum’s exhibition areas. As the collection is contemporary, special attention is given to preventive conservation with a view to minimising deterioration caused by aging, normal wear and tear and environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity or exposure to light. The Museum has a cuttingedge restoration workshop where the latest techniques for restoring textiles, clothing and other items in the collection are used.
ELABORACIÓN DE MANIQUÍES
The rigorous demands of preventive conservation require the items in the collection to be displayed on individual supports made of neutral materials and specially made to meet the exact measurements of each garment. In preparation for setting up the Museum’s permanent exhibition, extraordinarily intensive work had to carried out to produce the supports and padded underfittings to reproduce the exact silhouette for which the original garment had been designed.
RECEPCIÓN DE OBRA
The Museum exacts the same demanding standards in the care and handling of the collection pieces when they are on display outside the Museum. An exhaustive checking protocol is carried out throughout each stage of the process: transport, installation, dismounting and return of the items when on loan to other museums or institutions.
