1939

Worn by Rita María Fernández-Rivera y Gómez.

Long dress, cut at waistline. Short-sleeved fitted bodice with jewel neckline and rounded turndown collar. Fastens at the front with self-fabric buttons.

The full bias-cut skirt is assembled with gores in alternating colours. Fastens on the left side with a metallic zip.

In a display of his command of technique, Balenciaga constructed this model using geometrical pieces, assembled perfectly to fit the female torso, with no need for darts. The richness of the fabric and the colour contrast add formality to this simple-lined model. This dress bears a great resemblance to some of the models designed by his muchadmired Vionnet.
