Lines are at the centre of this piece: a floor length dress with slits down each side, made using linear fabric that imitates the partings of the ever present rock formations of Iceland’s landscape, where the student grew up. The similar formations in Gretaria inspired the design, which evokes the Rocky Mountains of the students’ and Balenciaga’s homeland through the continuous linear patterns that drape the body in a voluminous silhouette.
Materials and volumes
The student explores forms and volumes in their design. With the use of stick pins on the bias, the student was able to give the fabric the framework needed to explore the structural possibilities through draping techniques to create maximum volume. The dress boasts a large collar that turns into a cape on the left shoulder, complementing the simple, structural gown at the base. The print was made by adding stitching, dying the fabric black, and removing the stitches to leave behind linear patterns.
