Chillida Balenciaga. Plying form

With roots in Gipuzkoa and a bonds of friendship connecting them, Eduardo Chillida (San Sebastián, 1924 - San Sebastián 2002) and Cristóbal Balenciaga (Getaria, 1895 - Valencia 1972) also shared a common philosophical foundation.

Both were progenies of questioning and experimentation. United in a quest for beauty and harmony, they approached the materials of their craft with respect, each keenly attuned to the distinct cadence of the demanding yet loyal allies of sculptor and couturier.

They both created art through elimination, crafting an interplay between empty and full spaces and constantly pushing the boundaries. By folding, bending and shaping, they managed to penetrate the inner space of their creations, a place where proportion and poetry are key.

It might have been these shared concepts that motivated Eduardo Chillida to start on his study for Homage to Balenciaga in 1987. Marking the centenary of the artist’s birth, this exhibition invites the visitor to explore and learn, through ‘the dark light of the Atlantic’, about the common ground shared by the sculptor of air and the couturier of space.

The exhibition was curated by Igor Uria, Director of Collections at the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum, in collaboration with the curatorial team at Chillida-Leku, with support from the Eduardo Chillida – Pilar Belzunce Foundation, the Eduardo Chillida Estate and other private collections.
